What do you have to lose?

Anyone I saw out on their bike today that wasn’t wear a helmet got one of these.50014~Finger-Posters.jpg Yes, I know is not very nice but for some reason I felt like doing it. I heard a really funny thing the other day. “I have no good reason for not wearing one, I am old school”… spoken by the man with a blackberry and an SRM.

Word. So you basically rode one-handed?

Biz Markie is old skool. Rakim is old skool. SRM’s not so much.

Did you see Gilbert Arenas out there?

Peace and congrats. On the kid, not the one-handed ride.

    Mikey No Likey Weary Helmety!

You know, don’t get up all on your high horse now that you got yourself a little oversized legged amurican in the oven! All bet you that guy mows his lawn bearfoot with one of them old push mowers….cuz he’s “just sorta old school I guess”.

You REALLY need to wear a helmet if you are on a high horse. Those things are dangerous and unpredictable. Unpredictable, creepy, glassy-eyed dinosaurs.

But I still think that most horses would probably elect to wear a helmet if they were given the choice. I don’t know if it would have helped Barbaro but he probably would have felt a little safer. He seemed like a pretty smart horse. But then again, it’s the same feed bag whether you win or lose fellas. As long as you make it home.

Bearfoot made me laugh out loud. But for all the wrong reasons. Like when I watch someone slip on the ice or fall off a horse. See, it’s all cyclical.

Is it Sunday? the preacher is in the houzz!

Dan, FWIW I’m down with the cause…whether it’s TIAA pros descending mountains or helmetless Dads with their helmeted kids on Grant’s Trail bike path, there’s no reason NOT to wear one!

I don’t find seatbelts too darn comfortable in the middle of summer, either, but they, too, have saved my life in the past!

    PS - …and I _am_ old skool.

  8. muchacho grande Says:

If I see a biker without a lid on, I just scream “helmet!” as loud as I can when I pass them on the road.
Maybe you could pair that with the exposing of your digit of doom. Otherwise, I think you’re just confusing people.

  9. Luis Zamudio Says:

I’ve seen you ride without a HELMET!

-A few years back but I am reformed.

Amen dude. I’m in Colorado Springs for three weeks and nobody here wears helmets. People may start getting the bird from me too.

  13. Slingen Says:

Maybe you can start another website Dan…similar to this one…harder to get the idot helmetless people to stop for a photo though….

    Dan,
Okay, I understand that you almost died from head injuries, I’m very glad you didn’t. I’m also very happy if it was your choice to wear a helmet that tragic day. However; what makes you think that someone’s choice to not wear a helmet constitutes them as deserving of a middle finger? You are far to intelligent for such bizarre behavior and I’m sure you understand that all people make their own choices. Sometimes these choices are poor or are riddled with lame excuses, but they are their own choices nonetheless. Just because certain individuals don’t share your views on helmet safety doesn’t make them deserving of a rude gesture.

Maybe your just getting these people to think about what they are doing, maybe you just had a bad day, or maybe your truly care about these people and want to help them. Nevertheless, I’m sure there are better methods for encouraging helmet safety than giving a person the “bird.” I’m dumb so I don’t know what would be a better way, but what I do know is if I ever saw some “pro” giving me the the one finger wave, for no apparent reason or explanation all I’m going to think is, “geez - that guy is an asshole.”
    Maybe I’m just narrowminded.

Feel free to belittle my post or point out that I used an anonymous name. Oh yes, I do wear my helmet when riding.

  15. Dan Says:

“Yes, I know is not very nice but for some reason I felt like doing it.”

I don’t mind an anonymous post or reading your opinion.

When it comes to the helmet issue I am extremely narrow minded. I will continue to be until I get a good reason why you shouldn’t wear a helmet.

Funny thing about the finger day that I forgot to mention. The only guys I saw not wearing helmets were all pros I know by first name. In fact I like these guys all a little bit so consider them being rude by not wearing a helmet because if they were hurt seriously in an accident where a helmet may have helped them out I would feel as I didn’t do enough to try and sway them to my way of thinking. Like I have said before. I am also sure their mother, farther, wifes, children, siblings, niece or nephew and friends would all hate to see them hurt.

just watched a buddy of mine get knocked out cold in a bike wreck last night when he hit his bare head on the ground. Luckily it was only a concussion. Never going without mine again

    Its real.

Sorry to hear your news, I wish him the best!

I grew up with Dan and we lived on our bikes and did all sorts of stupid things that probably should have ended us both(him more then me..I am pansy). We grew up back in the days when no one wore a helmet unless they were on a track.

I think it is a great thing Dan does with his push for helmets and as the Gm of the Alpine Shop would like to extend helmets to any one that mentions him or his blog for 10% over my cost. I also challenge any other bike shop owners or managers in the area (or any where for that matter to do the same.

When it comes to helmets in my mind it is not about making $$. But on the other hand customers that are still alive spend more cash…..

I like to flip off fat people ’cause they are choosing an unsafe lifestyle. They totally get it, usually. I feel like I’m making a real difference in their lives.
